NEW YORK--The New York Jets shocked the sports world on Monday when they announced they had acquired quarterback Brett Favre from the Green Bay Packers. According to Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, the team wasn’t terribly interested in the aging signal-caller, but made the move in order to “spice up” a rather slow sports day.

“I was just sitting in my office surfing the web and it was one of those really slow, boring sports days,” Tannenbaum told the New York Times. “So I’m thinking to myself, ‘I should do something, make some kind of move, that will get people buzzing.’ I kicked around a few ideas, then settled on trading for Brett Favre. Well, mission accomplished. People are buzzing. And this was a lot better than my original idea of having Chad Pennington killed...okay, a little better.”

The Jets now have three quarterbacks in Pennington, Kellen Clemens and Favre, but Tannenbaum isn’t worried. As far as he is concerned, the situation will work itself out.

“Ah, who cares? A lot of teams have a surplus of quarterbacks,” he said. “It’s actually a pretty cool problem to have. I’ll let Eric figure out what to do with all these guys. I assume he’ll start Brett, make Chad the backup, and make Kellen the emergency quarterback, which is a good spot for him because in emergencies you want someone who will come in and fumble the ball.”

The acquisition of Favre did come at a price, however. The Jets sent two second round picks in 2009 and a third round pick in 2010 to the Packers in order to make the deal.

“I didn’t think too much about the picks we were sending over,” Tannenbaum said. “Honestly I was just bored and decided to pull the trigger. They asked for a bunch of picks and I was like ‘What the hell.' Sure I did it on a whim but I think it will help this team in the end. I mean Brett’s a Hall of Fame quarterback. He could seriously win us a Super Bowl. If not, whatever. Somebody else will win it. It’s not all on us.”

The Jets plan to hold a press conference on Wednesday to introduce their newest superstar. The Packers, on the other hand, are eager to close the book on what has been a roller coaster ride of an offseason.

As for Favre, he’s just happy to have the opportunity to play football again.

“When I heard it was the Jets, I was like ‘Oh okay. That’s fine,’” Favre told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen today. “I mean it’s not the ideal situation, and it’s kind of a crappy team, and the coach is a little dim, and the fans are obnoxious, but football is football. I think I can definitely do something with this team. I think I can lead them to the playoffs. I feel…you know what? I don’t think I want to play after all. No, I do. No, forget it. I don’t. I just can’t commit. I don’t know…I’ll need a few weeks to make my decision.”
