SAN ANTONIO , TX --Basketball fan Glen Robinson has been on cloud nine for the past month. The 32-year-old scored courtside tickets to the NBA playoffs when he was signed by the San Antonio Spurs on April 5 th, and he’s been enjoying the view ever since.

“I tell you, there is nothing like NBA playoff action,” Robinson said after the Spurs’ thrilling Game 5 victory of the Phoenix Suns. “And when you’re up close like that you really get a sense of how fast it is. The grace, the power, the athleticism—it’s like ‘Wow.’ I love this game.”

Robinson said one of the greatest things about the courtside seats is rubbing shoulders with celebrities.

“Get this. The other night when we were in Phoenix , I look over and there’s Sly Stallone,” he said. “He’s sitting about three seats away from me. He’s really short in person, but he’s built like a brick shithouse. And I think—I’m not sure—but I think I saw that chick from The OC sitting behind him. Oh, and last but not least: Tim-freaking-Duncan. Seriously, he was sitting right next to me. I gave him a towel and he totally glanced in my direction. I was a little star struck, but he ended up being just a regular guy. Real down to earth.”

To top it off, Robinson was allowed into the locker room to be with the rest of the team.

“Whoa, talk about intense. I went to a real locker room and hung out with real NBA players,” he said. “I didn’t even know what to say. I was like ‘Uhhhh…’ I was so nervous! I talked to some of the guys and told them about how I used to play basketball and was pretty good. They actually seemed kind of interested, except for that guy, what’s his name, Tony Parker. He threw his towel in my face and told me to wash it. Little did he know, I held on to it and gave him a new one. I still have the thing at my house. I’m never going to wash it.”

Robinson was signed by the Spurs to give them a warm body on the bench in case of an emergency. Though he was never used in the Phoenix series, coach Gregg Popovich says Robinson serves a definite purpose.

“Oh we definitely need Big Dog on our bench,” he said. “He’s a guy who’s got a lot of experience and can fill in if Tim Duncan, Nazr Mohammed, Bruce Bowen, Manu Ginobli, Tony Parker, Brent Barry, Robert Horry, Linton Johnson, and Tony Massenburg all get hurt. Of course if they all get hurt he’d probably be the only one on the court, but if we’re playing the Suns he could still put up about 60 points.”

Robinson’s last game was against the Seattle Supersonics on May 19 th, when he logged a workmanlike one minute of playing time. During the one minute, he averaged a total of zero points, but his teammates say his contributions don’t always show up on the stat sheet.

“Sure, when you look at the stats at the end of the game, you’re not going to see gaudy numbers next to Glenn’s name,” said center Tim Duncan. “Not everybody can have eye popping statistics like me. In fact, Glenn had no statistics at all the last time he played, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t contribute. I remember once during his minute of play he set a kick ass pick for Tony [Parker]. Although when I looked at the tape I noticed he was just standing there staring at his watch and Luke Ridnour sort of bumped into him. Still, you can’t fault him for that. I’m sure he just wanted to know what time it was.”

Now that the Spurs have advanced to the NBA finals once again, Robinson is looking forward to another round of playoffs with his spectacular seats.

“I’m going to the finals, baby! Woo!” Robinson yelled. “I can’t believe it. This is going to kick so much ass. Courtside seats, Spurs vs. Pistons. That is what it’s all about. I’m going to bring my cell phone so I can call all my friends and tell them to eat their frigging hearts out. They’ll all be sitting at home on the couch watching while I’ll be sitting on the floor rubbing shoulders with the rest of the team. What a great perk this is. I’m so glad the Spurs signed me. Otherwise I would’ve had to call that damn radio station and been the 14 th caller. Oh, and you know what the best part is? I’m making $1.5 million for this.”
