MINNEAPOLIS--Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer is the favorite to win the AL MVP this year and the all-star catcher is eagerly anticipating the announcement. He even admitted, in a moment of candor, the winning the MVP is “way cooler” than winning a World Series, especially since “you don’t have to share” the MVP award.

“The great thing about the MVP is it’s yours,” Mauer told the Star Tribune. “You don’t have to share the honor with your teammates, coaches , fans – it’s all about you. A World Series is nice and all, but it’s a team thing, and every do-nothing scrub on the roster gets a ring. The MVP? It’s all me. And anybody who lays their grubby hands on it is getting a slap.”

Mauer admitted he was disappointed at his team’s performance in the ALDS, but said that he got over it quickly once talk turned to his MVP candidacy.

“I really felt like we had a chance to beat the Yankees this year,” said Mauer. “I gotta admit I was a little disappointed. But now my focus is on that MVP award. I’ve already forgotten about the playoffs. While all those suckers are playing in freezing October temperatures, I’ll be snuggling in my nice warm bed with my new trophy.”

Mauer’s teammates are pulling for him to win the award, as most feel that the MVP is a team award that reflects positively on everyone in the organization, not just one player.

“It’s always great when one of your teammates wins the MVP because that’s not something you can accomplish by yourself,” said first baseman Michael Cuddyer. “I’m sure Joe would be the first to admit that this is a team award, made possible by the contributions and support of everyone in this locker room. Joe is a sensational player, but like anyone, he needs his teammates to succeed. I just hope winning this thing softens the blow of not winning a World Series.”

When told of Cuddyer’s comments, Mauer reiterated that MVP stood for “Most Valuable Player,” not “Most Valuable Group of Interchangeable Spare Parts.”
