BOSTON--Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek exercised a $3 million option to stay in the game of baseball next year. Varitek will once again play for the Boston Red Sox, the only team that has any use for him. “It’s great to be coming back to Boston again,” said Varitek. “They’re the team I’ve been with most of my career. By picking up this option, I am showing how loyal I am to the Sox. I’m also showing how completely bereft of other options I am. It’s either the Red Sox or retirement. But don’t tell Scott Boras I said that. I’m supposed to say that I have 10 more good years left and about 13 or 14 teams are interested in me. And I’m supposed to say that my body is in better shape than ever, even though I cannot get into a catcher’s crouch for more than three innings at a time now.”
