Suns Celebrate Diversity By Honoring One Ethnic Group |
May 6 , 2010 |
PHOENIX--The Phoenix Suns donned jerseys reading “Los Suns” for their home playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday as a way of honoring their state’s Latino community. Owner Robert Sarver said honoring the lone ethnic group was a way of “celebrating diversity.” “This isn’t a political statement or anything,” Sarver said of the jerseys. “It’s simply a way of celebrating diversity. What better way to do that than to isolate one lone ethnic group and place them in the spotlight? Diversity! Yea! Okay, so ‘diversity’ implies a number of different ethnic groups. What are we going to do, honor them all on the same jersey? It’s just a word, okay? Let’s not overanalyze it. We love everybody but our jerseys are only so big.” The gesture greeted with a mixed reaction, pleasing members of the Latino community but angering advocates of the word “The.”
